A prime example of how philanthropy enhances public higher education can be found at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF). The CSFPF plays a crucial role in supporting students, faculty, and the broader community. Through its efforts, the foundation strengthens CSUF’s capacity to offer high-quality education and drive innovation.

Many of these scholarships target first-generation college students and those from underrepresented backgrounds. The CSFPF played a critical role in CSUF’s successful Comprehensive Campaign initiated in 2020 and concluded in 2023. The University set an initial goal of $175 million. The CSFPF decided to set a goal as being one of the lead donors, which required a minimum commitment from the Board of $5 million. Part of the incentives in the campaign that led to its success was a matching gift component that matched the donor’s gift with a 50% increase to their stated amount. So, if a donor decided to give $100,000, the university matched that amount up to 50%, or $50,000. This incentive played a key role in the Campaign’s success.
For me personally, I used this matching program to increase my investment in the Titan Capital Management Program. We increased the funds under management for the students which will lead to years and years of increased distributions to help fund the program. In addition, we built a new facility named the Titan Capital Management Investment Research Center that is designed to emulate in small scale the kind of investment management facility students will encounter in the investment management industry.
Public and private partnership is critical to fund raising, especially for public universities that don’t have access to ultra wealthy individuals that graduated from private universities. The Titan Capital Management Program is a stunning example of how the private and public sectors can work together to achieve excellence in student outcomes. At the grand opening of the new TCM Investment Research Center earlier this year, the TCM program raised an additional $90,000 through a matching program with local organizations, the TCM community, and TCM alumni making contributions. Leadership from both CSFPF board members and the TCM community has mattered a great deal in TCM’s success.
