California State University Fullerton (CSUF) has an NCAA Division-I athletics program with 20 men’s and women’s teams, including basketball, cross country, soccer, and golf. Fullerton had a strong golf program in the 1960s and 1970s, producing a pair of national champions—Martha Wilkinson (DGWS) in 1967 and Paul Wise (Div. II) in 1973—but the school shut down women’s and men’s golf in 1985-86 and 1987-88, respectively. CSUF reinstated its golf program in 2009-10, and has since had a great deal of team success, while also developing the skills of golfers who have gone on to compete professionally on the DP World Tour, PGA Tour Canada, and Korn Ferry Tour.

Since the return of the golf program, the CSUF men’s team was co-Big West Champions in 2013 and won the Big West Championship in 2014 and 2019. The women’s team had its best-ever season in 2024-25, winning the Big West Championship for the first time and advancing to the NCAA Regionals. They advanced to the NCAA Championship, becoming the first No. 10 seed to do so.

While CSUF has had several standout golfers over the years, much of the program’s success can be attributed to its leaders, specifically longtime coaches Jason Drotter and Kathryn Hosch. Here’s a look at the coaching careers and accolades of these two coaches and their assistants in 2025-26.

Jason Drotter

Fullerton was the only Big West Conference school without a men’s golf team before the 2009-10 season. Looking to be competitive against conference rivals with already-established programs, the school’s athletics department sought a coach with collegiate golf and teaching experience. In 2008, CSUF announced that Drotter, a former golfer at Long Beach State who coached boys’ and girls’ golf at Villa Park High School, would be the director of golf operations and coach the men’s team.

“I am honored to have been chosen as the director of golf here at Cal State Fullerton,” Drotter said in a release. “During my brief involvement here, I am convinced that the athletics department is second to none. Given this, the strong support of our donors, and our geographic location, I feel confident in our future success.”

Considering his accomplishments and longevity, CSUF made the right choice in selecting Drotter. He is coaching his 17th season with the men’s team in 2025-26 and has overseen plenty of team and individual success. In addition to the Big West Championships, the Titans have also played in the NCAA Sugar Grove Regional (2014) and NCAA Myrtle Beach Regional (2019) and won 25 team titles, including 10 in the last five years. They’ve also had seven consecutive top-five finishes in the Big West Championship.

Titans golfers have won 14 individual titles under Drotter, while two players— Mark Anguiano (2014) and Tegan Andrews (2024)—won Big West Golfer of the Year. Drotter, a four-time Big West Coach of the Year, has also coached 14 Big West All-Conference First Team selections, 13 Big West All-Conference Honorable Mentions, and 2021 Big West Freshman of the Year winner Garrett Boe.

Kathryn Hosch

Hosch is in her ninth season as head coach of the women’s golf team, having replaced Pearl Sinn-Bonanni before the 2017-18 season. She was at the helm of the team for its historic 2024-25 season, but had several successes previously, including five team titles and 10 individual tournament winners. She also coached 2020-21 and 2023-24 Big West Golfer of the Year recipients Brittany Shin and Davina Xanh.

In addition to a Big West title and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2024-25, the Titans earned four Big West Golfer of the Month honors, and Kaitlyn Zermeno Smith became the third female CSUF athlete to win Big West Golfer of the Year. Hosch, a former two-year letter winner for the Titans, has also coached 24 Big West All-Academic student-athletes and 16 WGCA All-American Scholars.

Matthew Schafer

A standout player under Drotter from 2021-25, Matthew Schafer joined the coaching staff for the men’s team prior to the 2025-26 season. The Long Beach, California, native had a career scoring average of 73.5 in 38 tournaments representing Fullerton and recorded a career-best fourth-place finish at the 2023 Nick Watney Invitational. In his senior year, he placed among the top 15 at the Big West Championship.

Linley Ooi

Another former CSUF student-athlete, Linley Ooi played for the women’s golf team from 2021-24 and is now in her second year as an assistant coach. She worked alongside Hosch for the historic 2024-25 season, when the Titans became only the eighth Big West team to make the NCAA Championships (and the first in a decade). During her collegiate career, she had eight top-20 finishes in 27 tournaments, including a second-place result at the 2023 Red Rocks Invitational.
